about

I played ukulele around a campfire session last summer at The Blyth Power Ashes festival. At 3 O'clock in the morning, as we were all leaving the fire, I asked Annie Hatcher if I could play at this year's festival. She asked me to send some stuff. I sent everything I had. I later discovered that I was on the list for this year's festival on the back of what I sent.

So I decided to write an entire album of completely different stuff.

The name All Those Ghastly Cavities also stems from The Ashes - an overheard snippet of conversation from the toilet block.

I asked Steve Fox, a friend and former bass playing band mate, who had put his bass guitar out to pasture, if he would like to be involved...I kept pestering Steve with songs via e-mail and told him that he was in a band called All Those Ghastly Cavities and we had a gig in August in a tent in Tewkesbury, and he surprisingly went along with it.

Initially I wanted the band to be all post-punk twangly guitars with quirky basslines influenced by The Nightingales, The Keatons and Bogshed.
But then Steve said "Can't we just be The Cravats?" who we had recently seen playing with The Nightingales and had blown us away. This prompted me to write what became "Stuck in a Lift With Jethro".

Unfortunately Steve doesn't actually feature on this recording as these are essentially mostly demos that I have hounded him with over the last few months and I'm far too impatient to wait and record them properly after we have learnt how to play them.

So here I present the Coley Portions blueprint of the forthcoming All Those Ghastly Cavities debut L.P.

Or something.
